Kaja Brown is an award winning writer, journalist and intersectional activist living in South Wales.
Kaja often draws from her experiences as a disabled, queer environmentalist in her work. She is interested in how storytelling intersects with environmentalism.
Kaja has long been part of the social & climate justice movement. During the pandemic she helped run a monthly online open mic night called ‘Writing Activism’ where writers were invited to share work on different activist topics. Some of these themes included disability, mental health, neurodivergence, race, gender and sexuality. She has facilitated both environmental and creative writing workshops and started a blog on intersectional environmentalism called ‘The Creative Climate Activist’.
Kaja also worked as Digital Communications Co-ordinator for Climate Cymru. During this time she received training on marketing and comm’s in the climate justice movement and learned about communicating the climate crisis effectively.
Kaja has been writing and editing for publications for nearly a decade. She has both a BA and MLitt in Creative Writing. She was chosen as part of the 2017 WriteNow cohort with Penguin Random House, and more recently has been awarded the 2024 WLCOW Young Artist Prize to develop her novel. Kaja is the current Reviews Editor for Poetry Wales as well as a Network Weaver for Inclusive Journalism Cymru.

Kaja’s writing has been published in Refinery 29, Diva Magazine, Queer AF, The Welsh Agenda, Inclusive Journalism Cymru, New Welsh Review, Pebble Mag, Rife Magazine, Mooky Chick and Shelby X Studios. She also has an essay published in the book ‘Rife: 21 Stories from Britain’s Youth’ ed. Nikesh Shukla.
Kaja is currently working on a fantasy manuscript which encompasses her interests of mental health, environmentalism and social justice in a Nordic Setting. Kaja has drawn on her own Icelandic heritage to write on Nordic folklore and life.
Kaja has now gone fully freelance and is open to writing, editorial and facilitation work. Please check out the ‘Contact’ page for information of how to get in touch.
